Kaizer Chiefs Beat Kabuscorp in Penalty Drama to Keep CAF Confederation Cup Dream Alive

Kaizer Chiefs survived a tense afternoon at FNB Stadium, edging Kabuscorp 5–4 on penalties to reach the Second Preliminary Round of the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

The Soweto giants entered the return leg trailing 1–0 but struck back through Glody Lilepo, who leveled the tie on aggregate with a clinical first-half finish.

That goal gave Chiefs a lifeline and set the tone for a dramatic contest.

Amakhosi pushed hard to add a second, but Kabuscorp goalkeeper Rachoni frustrated them with several sharp stops.

Each missed chance raised the tension inside the stadium.

With the aggregate score locked at 1–1 after full time, penalties decided the outcome. Chiefs held their nerve from the spot, converting five kicks to Kabuscorp’s four.

Brandon Petersen made the difference with a crucial save, while Gaston Sirino, Reeve Frosler, Flavio Da Silva, Thabo Cele and Aden McCarthy all found the net.

The shootout win sparked wild celebrations in Soweto as Chiefs kept their continental dream alive.

Their reward is a Second Round tie against either AS Simba of DR Congo or Djabal d’Iconi of Comoros.

Elsewhere, CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round action continues this weekend as clubs across the continent fight for a place in October’s decisive fixtures.
