Former Cameroon international Alexandre Song has applauded the rapid growth and competitiveness of African club football following Monday’s TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup group stage draws in Johannesburg.
Song, who served as one of CAF’s draw assistants, said the pairings reflect the remarkable progress of the game across the continent.
“I think it’s a very good and balanced draw,” Song told CAF Online. “In both the Champions League and Confederation Cup, every team has a real chance. African football is growing fast, and the gap between the big and small clubs is closing.”
He pointed to recent international performances from rising nations as further proof of the continent’s progress.
“Look at teams like Cape Verde, there are no small sides anymore. Everyone is improving, and those who prepare well and show the right mentality can go all the way,” he added.
While praising the overall standard, Song admitted he was disappointed not to see any Cameroonian clubs reach this stage. “Of course, I wish we had a Cameroonian team here,” he said to CAF Online. “We came close, but we’ll learn from it and come back stronger next year.”
The former FC Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder closed by highlighting the passion and professionalism now defining African club football. “You can feel the ambition everywhere,” Song noted.
“It’s an exciting time for the game in Africa. With AFCON around the corner, fans can expect another thrilling showcase of African talent” he concluded.
