Ghanaian tactician Charles Kwablan Akonnor has secured his first trophy as head coach of Kenyan powerhouse Gor Mahia, capping a strong start to his reign with a 1-0 win over Bandari FC in the ODM@20 Tournament final.
A moment of brilliance from substitute Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw sealed the victory in the 64th minute, as the Ghanaian winger fired a stunning free-kick into the top corner from 35 yards out, leaving Bandari goalkeeper Levis Opiyo helpless.
The win handed Gor Mahia their first title of the campaign and marked an early milestone for Akonnor, who was appointed ahead of the new season.
Reflecting on the victory, the 51-year-old coach expressed delight at his side’s performance despite missing several regular starters due to international duty.
“This is our first trophy of the season and I’m happy. What excites me even more is that the player who scored wasn’t involved in our last two league matches. That shows we have depth in the squad,” said Akonnor.
Akonnor’s success in Kenya adds another highlight to his coaching journey, which has included stints with Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, and Ghana’s national team.
