Liverpool’s Freddie Woodman Reflects on Joining the Club

Liverpool’s goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has shared that he almost did not join the club, attributing his decision to a pivotal conversation with his father.

Woodman is set to take the field as the starting goalkeeper for Liverpool against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, marking his official debut for the team.

Nearly Missing Out on Liverpool

The 28-year-old shot-stopper transitioned to the Premier League champions from Preston North End during the summer on a free transfer, after spending three seasons in the Championship. The club’s management, including coach Arne Slot, identified Woodman as a necessary addition following the exit of Caoimhin Kelleher.

Last year, Liverpool finished as runners-up in the Carabao Cup, losing 2-1 to Newcastle at Wembley. With high hopes, Woodman and fellow summer acquisition Giorgi Mamardashvili are expected to propel the team deeper into the competition this year.

Woodman disclosed that he nearly passed up the opportunity to join Liverpool during a recent interview with the club’s website, discussing the choices he faced.

“Whenever I get the chance to wear this jersey, whether in pre-season or any competition, I’ll strive to give my all and savor every moment. I’ve spent significant time in the Championship, so representing a club with such a rich history is quite special,” he said.

“There was a point during the summer when Liverpool came into play. Although I had other offers, my dad advised, ‘How do you say no to Liverpool? You have to consider it.’ I’m truly pleased I made this decision.”

Aspiring to Mirror Kelleher’s Achievements

Woodman also expressed his desire to follow in Kelleher’s footsteps, noting that photographs of Kelleher’s performances during the 2022 and 2024 Carabao Cup victories are displayed prominently at the AXA Training Centre. He seeks to emulate that level of success.

“This club clearly values this competition, as it does with all competitions,” Woodman remarked. “Reaching the later stages and playing at Wembley underscores its importance to the supporters. I see Kelleher’s picture regularly in the training area, and it emphasizes how significant these achievements are. Winning trophies here allows you to leave your mark in the club’s history.”
