Struth Reveals Discussion with Alonso About Wirtz’s Potential Move to Real Madrid

Volker Struth has shared that he engaged in discussions with Xabi Alonso, the former manager of Florian Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, regarding the possibility of the young talent joining Real Madrid prior to his transfer to Liverpool.

Struth recounted: “At a time when there were speculations about Wirtz joining either Liverpool or Bayern Munich, I reached out to Xabi Alonso and suggested: ‘You need to bring the Leverkusen player to Real Madrid.'”

A Message to Pérez

He continued, stating, “Xabi responded: ‘You don’t need to tell me; you should tell Florentino Pérez.’ Consequently, I sent him a message saying: ‘Dear Florentino, I’ve mentioned this to you numerous times: I have a player here that I strongly endorse.'”

Wirtz’s Impact and Missed Opportunities

Struth emphasized, “Real Madrid historically has been stronger than what they are today. It’s evident that Florian Wirtz would enhance any team globally. Ultimately, the opportunity didn’t materialize, as Liverpool, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich were the only clubs to formally reach out to Wirtz.”

He noted that the timing was not right that year due to factors concerning the squad and financial constraints. “Even Real Madrid doesn’t always have unlimited resources,” he added.
