Leading the Pack: Ronaldo

The dynamic Cristiano Ronaldo topped the list of most followed players in the UK for September, with many still keenly interested in his career as he turns 40.

His longtime rival, Lionel Messi, came in second, further exemplifying their enduring competition.

In third place was Kylian Mbappe, the star of Real Madrid, closely followed by Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who was the runner-up for the Ballon d’Or.

Alexander Isak, a forward for Liverpool, secured the fifth position, with less than half of Ronaldo’s follower count.

He led a closely packed group featuring Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Barcelona duo Marcus Rashford and Pedri, along with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane.

Vinicius Junior wrapped up the top ten, having 43% of Mbappe’s following.

Popularity of Barcelona and Madrid Players

As evidenced, athletes from Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the most sought after by fans.

Players from these two iconic clubs represented 50% of the names in the top 10, a trend that persisted even further down the rankings.

La Liga players also featured prominently, with Raphinha (13th), Jude Bellingham (14th), Arda Guler (15th), Rodrygo (16th), and Robert Lewandowski (17th) collectively making up half of the top 20.

Other notable names among the top 20 were Cole Palmer (11th) and Mohamed Salah (12th), with the lower end of the list including Joao Pedro, Ousmane Dembele, and Florian Wirtz.

Global Perspectives

Ronaldo was the most followed athlete worldwide, as well as in countries like Portugal, Italy, and Germany, although not everywhere.

In France, Mbappe led the charts, followed by Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal in that order, which was mirrored in Spain.

Some regions displayed a preference for their local stars, with Poland leaning toward Lewandowski and Neymar emerging as the favorite in Brazil.
