PSG Goalkeeper Safonov Breaks Hand While Making Shootout Saves
PSG Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov Suffers Hand Fracture After Shootout Triumph
Injury Following Key Saves
Paris Saint-Germain’s goalkeeper Matvei Safonov has been diagnosed with a fractured hand, an injury he sustained while executing a spectacular series of saves during a penalty shootout that led to his team’s victory in the Intercontinental Cup.
During the shootout, Safonov made four consecutive saves as PSG triumphed over Brazil’s Flamengo with a score of 2-1. His remarkable performance earned the club its first international title, and following the victory, teammates celebrated by lifting him into the air.
Coach’s Insights on the Incident
PSG head coach Luis Enrique shared his thoughts on Safonov’s injury, indicating that it likely occurred during the shootout. “I can’t quite explain what happened; it’s remarkable,” Enrique commented in translated remarks. “The player himself is uncertain about the details.”
He continued, “We believe it happened during the third penalty attempt when he made an unusual motion that resulted in the fracture. Notably, he managed to save the last two shots despite the injury, driven by an adrenaline rush that allowed him to perform without feeling pain.”
“It’s astonishing how dedicated the players are, including Safonov, always ready to support the team. That’s the mentality we aim for,” he added.
Safonov’s Resilience
In a video shared on the messaging platform Telegram, Safonov did not directly address his injury but did express, “Regardless of the circumstances, I cannot be broken.”
PSG announced on Friday that Safonov’s condition would be re-evaluated in three to four weeks.
Context of the Injury
The Russian goalkeeper, who serves as PSG’s backup, had not seen any match action until summer acquisition Lucas Chevalier was sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained in late November. Chevalier was present on the bench for the match against Flamengo. PSG is set to compete in a Coupe de France match against Vendee Fontenay, a team from the fifth tier, this Saturday.
Moving Forward
This Intercontinental Cup victory has been a crowning achievement for PSG, which recently claimed the Champions League. However, coach Enrique emphasizes the need to remain focused. “I’m not dwelling on our past achievements; I concentrate on the present, which involves today’s training and our match on Saturday,” he stated. “While there are accolades from Paris for our accomplishments, we have a duty to represent this prestigious club and continue our journey. This year has been unforgettable, but our focus must remain on the present as we aim to conclude this remarkable year on a high note.”
