Aston Villa’s New Football Chief Discusses Upcoming January Activities

Club’s Approach in the Winter Window

Roberto Olabe, the newly appointed football chief at Aston Villa, has indicated that the club intends to be proactive during the upcoming January transfer window. Having taken over from Monchi earlier this season, he has shared insights regarding their strategies for player acquisitions.

The Importance of the Transfer Window

Describing the transfer periods as akin to festive occasions for fans, Olabe expressed his views on Villa TV, stating: “The transfer window is similar to Christmas or summer holidays for supporters. It’s a distinct time.” He emphasized, “While we are pleased with the current players under our management team and head coach Unai Emery, we are always looking for ways to enhance our squad.”

He further noted: “Our goal is to improve and identify solutions that can bolster our performance. If the opportunity arises in the market, we will certainly pursue improvements. However, advancing is contingent on our existing players enhancing their skills and contributions, and I have complete faith in our manager’s capability to maximize this current group.”

Focus on Current Players

Olabe reiterated the importance of concentrating on their present team while maintaining ambitions for further enhancements. “While it’s essential to be mindful of potential new players, our main focus rests on those who are currently part of the squad. We feel reassured and pleased with their competitive spirit and daily efforts. Certainly, we want to better ourselves, and if an opportunity to strengthen the squad emerges, we will seize it.”

Financial Constraints and Strategy

Addressing concerns regarding the Profit & Sustainability (PSR) regulations and their impact on the club, Olabe stated: “We need to adapt to the financial guidelines in place, respecting the structures that exist within the football environment. While we might have differing opinions on certain aspects, it’s crucial to abide by these regulations as we navigate the market.”

He added: “The reputation of the club is vital, and it’s essential for us to acknowledge our responsibility within these frameworks. While we are committed to balancing our ambitions and capabilities, we are working diligently to find harmony between our requirements and what is feasible.”
