Sharpe Supports Manchester United’s Choice in Diallo Over Garnacho
Former Manchester United player Lee Sharpe believes the club made the right decision by supporting Amad Diallo instead of Alejandro Garnacho.
Garnacho was transferred to Chelsea in August, as United’s coach Ruben Amorim chose to prioritize Amad as the team’s key winger.
Reflecting on their performances this season, Sharpe is confident that Amad is demonstrating his superiority in talent.
He stated to Tribalfootball.com: “Absolutely, I fully support that decision. While Garnacho is undoubtedly talented, I believe his decision-making needs improvement. I was among those who thought it might be a risk to allow him to leave.”
“The choices he made now seem to confirm that the manager’s call was justified.”
Commenting on Amad’s position on the right wing, Sharpe added: “Yes, it’s encouraging to see. He collaborates well with (Bryan) Mbeumo. Having a left foot allows him to go wide at times, but it’s also great to see him cut inside and create issues in the attacking phase.”
When asked about areas where Amad might improve, Sharpe responded: “Defensively, he could enhance his positioning and decision-making. He’s performed admirably so far. Although it’s not his primary position, which comes with greater defensive duties, he’s handling it well.”
“His work ethic and eagerness to improve as a player are clear. Ideally, he wouldn’t be required to drop back too much for defense, but he’s managing it effectively. Thus far, he hasn’t disappointed. He’s certainly been one of our standout players.”
Concerns Over Winger Depth
Nonetheless, Sharpe acknowledges that an injury to Amad could pose a problem. The Premier League champion believes Manchester United should consider adding another experienced wing-back to enhance options for Amorim.
He explained, “The coach doesn’t typically deploy traditional wingers, so the necessity for a plethora of wingers diminishes when using wing-backs and interior forwards.”
“However, there’s likely a shortfall in quality wing-backs. I find (Diogo) Dalot’s performance to be somewhat erratic, as he tends to lose possession too easily and can be defensively unreliable at times.”
“(Patrick) Dorgu has faced challenges with form and injuries this season. Therefore, it might indeed indicate a lack of depth in those roles, which is likely why Amad is getting so much playtime; as a winger and forward-minded player, he sometimes overlooks defensive duties.
“That said, I think he’s doing an excellent job. It might be wise to recruit another winger to complement the wing-back position.”
