Mason Greenwood Possesses the Potential to Secure a Ballon dOr
Mason Greenwood’s Potential to Claim Ballon d’Or Acknowledged by Marseille’s Coach
An Emerging Star at Marseille
Mason Greenwood is seen as a future contender for the Ballon d’Or by Marseille’s head coach, Roberto de Zerbi. The former Manchester United striker is currently in the process of revamping his career while playing for Marseille, and has already made a significant mark this season, netting 13 goals in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League, including a pivotal brace against Union St.-Gilloise.
Coach’s Praise for Greenwood
During a press conference on Friday, De Zerbi expressed confidence in Greenwood’s abilities, stating that there are no other players on the continent with his level of skill.
“I observe him daily, and his potential is immense,” De Zerbi stated. “In Europe, I don’t see anyone else who matches his caliber. He certainly has what it takes to aspire toward the Ballon d’Or. It will ultimately depend on his dedication and desire to strive for that accolade.”
De Zerbi further elaborated on Greenwood’s inherent talents, acknowledging the natural gifts he has received from his family.
“I believe he has the qualities necessary for the Ballon d’Or. However, I would like him to enhance his consistency,” he noted. “He needs to exert more intensity, and when the team faces challenges, he must manage the ball better, retaining possession to help the team advance because he has the skills to do so.”
Greenwood’s Journey and Challenges
In January 2022, Greenwood was suspended from Manchester United following serious allegations involving a young woman. Although he faced multiple charges, including attempted rape and assault, the Crown Prosecution Service declared in February 2023 that the case would be dropped. Currently, he is not in contention for a recall to the England national team and may potentially represent Jamaica on the international front in the future.
De Zerbi’s Expectations
De Zerbi emphasized his rigorous approach to coaching Greenwood because he recognizes the young player’s capabilities.
“The key is for him to understand this in three to four years,” he added. “It may not resonate with him immediately, but he may later reflect and appreciate my guidance as a coach who challenged him daily to thrive.”
He concluded with a personal goal, stating, “I aim to leave Marseille in a stronger position than when I arrived. Greenwood needs to evolve beyond the player I encountered at the start.”
