Gerrard Critiques Alexander-Arnold’s Move to Real Madrid
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has expressed his disapproval regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to transfer to Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold’s Controversial Departure
The England defender stirred discontent among Liverpool supporters after allowing his contract to expire, ultimately making a free transfer to Real Madrid.
Gerrard’s Insight
“I wouldn’t have chosen that path,” Gerrard remarked during an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “Trent is undoubtedly an outstanding athlete, one of the finest passers I’ve ever witnessed.”
He added, “He ranks alongside greats like David Beckham and Paul Scholes, without a doubt. However, leaving Liverpool at such a crucial juncture in his career, especially when a new contract was on the table, is a significant gamble. He is now facing the consequences of that choice. I genuinely hope it pays off for him because I have great admiration for him.”
Reflections on Major Clubs
Gerrard continued, “Taking off my Liverpool cap, any footballer would be enticed by approaches from clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid. When I received interest from Real Madrid during Jose Mourinho’s era, it certainly caught my attention.”
Admiring Big Clubs
Gerrard elaborated, “While my situation didn’t gain much attention due to the circumstances surrounding it, I cannot deny it was appealing. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are massive entities in the football world. No matter who you support, these clubs are bound to make you stop and think. If they don’t, you might not be human.”
He empathetically stated, “I can relate to Trent’s perspective. His close friend (Jude Bellingham) plays there, and perhaps he seeks new challenges after achieving everything at Liverpool. So, I grasp his motives.”
Critical View as a Liverpool Supporter
“Nonetheless, when I don my Liverpool cap again… I wonder, what are you doing? You’re part of one of Europe’s elite teams, achieving things that I still dream of accomplishing. You’re claiming European titles and are one of the pivotal players in the squad.”
Gerrard concluded, “The fanbase adores you. Why would you leave? But this sentiment comes from my allegiance to Liverpool, a club I truly cherish.”
