Liverpool Secures Defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes

Liverpool has officially announced the acquisition of defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes, with the player scheduled to join the team in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Transfer Details

According to reports, the transfer fee is set at £55 million ($74 million), along with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons. The 20-year-old is anticipated to play a significant role in Liverpool’s defensive restructuring.

Jacquet has committed to a contract that runs until 2031 at Anfield, with an option for an additional year.

Chelsea’s Involvement

Chelsea had previously settled on a price for Jacquet and did not foresee any personal issues affecting the move. However, the situation shifted when they opted to bring back center-back Mamadou Sarr from his loan at Strasbourg and declined offers for Josh Acheampong.

Contract Details

The 20-year-old defender will join Liverpool on a five-year contract starting from July 1, 2026, with an option for a sixth year.

Liverpool’s Interest and Strategy

Liverpool has maintained a longstanding interest in Jacquet, and discussions intensified over the weekend as it became evident that the player was eager to make the transfer to Anfield. This signing demonstrates Liverpool’s strategy of acquiring top young talent, with the average age of their signings in the past two transfer windows being under 22.

Defensive Needs

The club is currently in pursuit of defensive reinforcements, particularly with the futures of Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson still uncertain as both players are set to be out of contract this summer. Last year, Liverpool attempted to land Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace, but the move fell through on deadline day with Palace retracting the £35 million ($47.8 million) deal.

Future Prospects

Guéhi, an England international, has since joined Manchester City. Chelsea had also expressed interest in the center-back; however, reports indicate that he favors a switch to Liverpool, with personal terms likely to be a non-issue.
