Mainz 05’s Coach Optimistic After Key Bundesliga Victory
Strong Performance Against Eintracht Frankfurt
Following a significant triumph over their Bundesliga rivals Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz 05’s manager Urs Fischer is feeling confident about his team’s chances of avoiding relegation. This latest victory has extended Fischer’s squad’s unbeaten run to seven matches.
Climbing Up the League Table
The team has secured nine points from their last five league games, catapulting Mainz to 11th place in the Bundesliga standings with a total of 30 points. The widely acknowledged safety benchmark in the league is now well within their grasp, especially with seven matches still left in the season.
Minimal Squad Rotation
Interestingly, Fischer maintained consistency in his lineup over the past week, making only a couple of adjustments. Sheraldo Becker and Nelson Weiper alternated in supporting striker Philipp Tietz as part of Fischer’s 3-3-2-2 formation. The rest of the team remained unchanged for three consecutive matches.
A Week to Remember
“They were not let down,” Fischer stated after the match.
“It’s been a perfect week for us,” he expressed in the post-match briefing. “Following last week’s victory in Bremen and Thursday’s historic win in the Conference League, witnessing a performance like this after just two-and-a-half days was fantastic. We scored the goals and defended with passion in a 5-4-1 formation. I reiterate: it was simply a perfect week for us. We can take a moment to relax now.”
Managing Player Fatigue
When asked about his decision to limit squad changes, Fischer explained, “I believe most players are capable of handling three games in quick succession. From a load management perspective, this is a part of contemporary football. We utilized these two-and-a-half days for optimal recovery, with minimal time spent on the pitch. We conducted ‘replacement training sessions’ for those who didn’t feature in the matches, mainly concentrating on regeneration.”
The Importance of the Victory
“Obtaining all three points was undoubtedly crucial,” Fischer reflected on the significant, albeit somewhat surprising, win. “Both teams likely would have been satisfied with a 1-1 outcome. Yet, I want to emphasize that nothing is definitive until we have mathematically secured our status in the league. We can celebrate once we are certain we have no further concerns with relegation.”
Praise for Paul Nebel
In a lighter moment regarding his standout player, Fischer remarked, “If Paul Nebel continues to find the back of the net multiple times, we’re on the right path. I’m delighted for him. He has invested a tremendous amount of effort and made substantial improvements in his ball skills and forward movement. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of room for growth.”
