Getafe and Espanyol
Rise and Fall in LaLiga EA Sports
Having narrowly escaped relegation in the final moments of the 2024/25 season, both RCD Espanyol and Getafe CF are enjoying a robust performance this year. On the other hand, CA Osasuna and RCD Mallorca just fell short of European competition last season and are still searching for their form this year.
LaLiga EA Sports: Teams Making Their Mark
The last occasion that Getafe CF qualified for European competition was during the 2019/20 season, with José Bordalás at the management helm during his initial term. The following season saw them secure an eighth-place finish, but the team then faced a series of disappointing seasons, including struggles against relegation. They only managed to secure their top-flight status on the last day of last season, achieving a hard-fought 2-1 victory against RCD Mallorca on Matchday 37.
However, this season has seen Bordalás’ squad begin strongly, winning three out of their opening four matches of the 2025/26 season. Following a rough patch where they went without a victory for five games, they have now bounced back with three wins in their last six outings. Currently in eighth place, Getafe CF is back in contention for a European position, five years after their last appearance in the Europa League.
RCD Espanyol’s European Aspirations
That season also marked the last time that RCD Espanyol participated in European competitions. In the 2018/19 season, the Catalan club finished seventh, falling just six points short of Getafe CF, with both teams earning a spot in the Europa League.
However, things did not unfold as anticipated for Los Periquitos, as RCD Espanyol faced relegation to LALIGA HYPERMOTION twice within the next four seasons. But after regaining promotion a couple of years back, the Catalan side managed to secure their first-tier status on the final day of the 2024/25 season.
As the current season progresses, only four teams have recorded more victories than RCD Espanyol (eight). They are currently positioned fifth in the standings, propelled by a three-match winning streak. Under the guidance of Manolo González, the team has been formidable at home, winning six out of nine matches thus far. While their away form leaves something to be desired, they have the best defensive record on the road, conceding only six goals.
The upcoming match on Saturday night between Getafe CF and RCD Espanyol promises to be an intriguing clash, as both clubs aim for European qualification just a year after narrowly avoiding relegation.
A Shift in Competitive Dynamics
With two matches remaining last season, Rayo Vallecano occupied eighth place tied on points with ninth-placed CA Osasuna, both of them just ahead of RCD Mallorca in the race for a Conference League playoff spot. Rayo Vallecano ultimately secured European football for only the second time in their history, while both CA Osasuna and RCD Mallorca missed out by a narrow margin.
However, a few months later, RCD Mallorca is struggling, having managed only three wins in their first 15 games of this season, placing them just above the relegation zone following a 0-0 stalemate against the newly-promoted Real Oviedo.
CA Osasuna’s Fight for Survival
In a significant turnaround, CA Osasuna achieved a much-needed 2-0 win over Levante UD on Monday to break their six-match winless streak in the league. After finishing in the top 10 for five out of six seasons, Los Rojillos now find themselves in 15th place, just three points above the relegation zone.
Additionally, Girona FC currently holds the 18th spot, having shocked the footballing world only a few seasons ago by finishing third in the league and earning a Champions League berth for the first time in their history. Now, they are engaged in a battle for survival in the top division.
As we approach the halfway mark of what has been a fiercely competitive LALIGA EA SPORTS season, it is evident that circumstances in Spanish football can shift dramatically in a heartbeat.
