“No Safeguards” for Maresca Following “Intentional” Remarks – Rooney

Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, is expected to receive minimal “safeguards” after making ambiguous statements directed at the club’s leadership, according to former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.

Maresca’s Controversial Comments

The Italian coach labeled the days leading up to the Premier League match against Everton as “the worst 48 hours” since he began his tenure in June 2024.

In a surprising outburst, Maresca implied a lack of support for himself and his squad but did not specify whom he was criticizing.

Rooney’s Observations

“It felt very reminiscent of the Mo Salah situation last week, which came off as very intentional,” Rooney expressed during the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, available on BBC Sounds.

“He is fully aware of his intentions and the targets of his remarks, and the board and owners at Chelsea will definitely recognize he is directing his comments toward them.”

Presently, Chelsea is positioned fourth in the Premier League, having only secured two points from their last three matches, including a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League.

In contrast to the prominent support that Ruben Amorim received from Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier this season, Rooney believes that Maresca’s statements will not aid him positively if the team encounters further setbacks.

Respect for Club Management

“You must acknowledge the authority of a football club’s ownership. They are responsible for your hiring, and you are required to adhere to their directives. I believe he has slightly crossed that line,” Rooney added.

“There seems to be an underlying issue, whether it’s a disagreement or a concern regarding his job security, perhaps stemming from the two trophies he’s claimed and the points he has garnered.

“I doubt he is the type to retreat from his statements. He displays a considerable passion and determination. It’s unclear whether he has uncovered rumors about his job being in jeopardy, prompting him to be proactive by taking this stance. It’s quite peculiar.”

“I believe it will be difficult for the club to extend any protection to him following this incident, which is unfortunate.”
