Mateta Poised for Fiorentina Chance After Milan Transfer Disappointment

Crystal Palace to Start Jean-Philippe Mateta in Conference League Match

Mateta’s Opportunity Arises

Reports indicate that Crystal Palace will present striker Jean-Philippe Mateta with a starting position in the upcoming Conference League quarter-final first leg against Fiorentina. This comes after the French forward’s move to Milan fell through over three months ago.

Lack of Starting Appearances

Since January 25, when Palace suffered a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League, Mateta has not had the chance to start in any competitive match.

The Milan Transfer Saga

Mateta was on the brink of securing a deal with Milan during the closing days of the January transfer window. The two clubs had agreed to a transfer fee exceeding €30 million, prompting Crystal Palace to sign a replacement, Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Injury Concerns and Recovery

Earlier in the year, there were worries in the UK regarding Mateta potentially needing surgery for knee damage. However, coach Glasner later mentioned that Mateta could opt for a rehabilitation approach, which may enhance his prospects of representing France in the 2026 World Cup.

Decision Against Surgery

In February, Glasner explained the options for Mateta: “There are two ways we can do it: Either manage it, like we did. We can manage the knee until after the World Cup, because this is especially what JP is considering, his dream, playing for France at the World Cup. Or, the other one is that he undergoes the surgery.”

Ultimately, Mateta chose to forgo surgery, allowing him to return to play three months after the unsuccessful transfer to Milan. Tonight’s match against Fiorentina is anticipated to mark his return to starting action.
