Endrick: Ancelotti Advises Departure from Madrid to Join Lyon

Endrick Decisions to Join Lyon on Loan After Advice from Ancelotti

Recommendation from Ancelotti

Brazilian forward Endrick has taken the advice of his former coach Carlo Ancelotti before opting for a loan move to Ligue 1 side Lyon for the remainder of the season. The young talent, who is just 19 years old, started to gain recognition under Ancelotti. However, his playing time diminished this year after Xabi Alonso took over the coaching role at Real Madrid.

Endrick shared his thoughts at a press conference in Lyon, stating, “I had a conversation with Carlo about my next steps. He suggested what I should focus on to enhance my game, which really impacted me.” He went on to explain, “His guidance was clear: leave Real Madrid to gain playing time and further develop my skills in a place where I would be content. While it was ultimately my decision, Carlo’s input was significant because he’s an outstanding coach.”

Minimal Playing Time

This season, Endrick has only appeared in three matches for Madrid. Instead of feeling discouraged, he has chosen to view his time at the club positively. “Honestly, I tell my family that these months have been the most rewarding of my career,” he reflected. “I’ve had the chance to spend time with my wife, create our home, and build our life together.”

Endrick is now set to play for a Lyon team that has been showing progress under Portuguese manager Paulo Fonseca, currently lying fifth in Ligue 1 and just two points behind third place. The familiarity with Portuguese coaching was also appealing to him.

Familiar Environment

“The presence of a Portuguese coaching staff is beneficial, as I have already experienced working with a Portuguese coach, Abel Ferreira, at Palmeiras. Knowing their methods is an advantage,” he remarked.

During his last season with Ancelotti—now the coach of Brazil—Endrick scored seven goals in 37 appearances and was recognized for his swift pace and dribbling skills.

World Cup Prospects

With the potential of reuniting with Ancelotti later this year at the World Cup, Endrick has already made a name for himself on the international stage, scoring three goals for Brazil last year against teams such as England and Spain.

His football journey began at Palmeiras, where he scored 21 goals in 82 matches, eventually leading to what he described as a “dream” transfer to Madrid.

Lyon’s Brazilian Legacy

Historically, Lyon has been home to numerous talented Brazilian players. Recent examples include Lucas Paquetá and Bruno Guimarães, both now key players in the Premier League with their respective clubs, West Ham and Newcastle. Additionally, forwards such as Fred, Nilmar, and Giovane Élber, along with midfielder Edmilson and defenders Cris and Rafael, have all made significant contributions to the club.

However, the most renowned of all was Juninho, who earned acclaim as one of Europe’s best free-kick specialists, scoring 100 goals for Lyon during his tenure from 2001 to 2008.
