De Zerbi Set to Depart Marseille Following PSG Defeat
De Zerbi to Leave Marseille After Disappointing Results
Departure Agreement
Roberto De Zerbi and Marseille have mutually agreed on his departure following a streak of disappointing performances, as reported by sources close to the situation.
An interim coach will take the reins for the upcoming Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg this weekend.
Tensions and Poor Performance
Following several weeks of mounting pressure, conflicts with certain players, and unacceptable results—including a 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge that resulted in elimination from the Champions League and a heavy 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain—De Zerbi’s position became increasingly precarious.
Relationship Breakdown
Reports indicate that club president Pablo Longoria and sporting director Mehdi Benatia conducted meetings with players on Tuesday, revealing a significant rift between the coach and the team.
The conclusion drawn was that, to salvage the remainder of the season, parting ways with De Zerbi was the best course of action.
Confirmation of Departure
Frank McCourt, the American owner of Marseille, is expected to announce De Zerbi’s exit on Wednesday.
De Zerbi, who previously managed Brighton before joining Marseille in the summer of 2024, enjoyed a positive initial season, securing a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and returning the team to the Champions League. However, his second season has proven much more challenging.
Currently, Marseille stands fourth in the Ligue 1 table, trailing leaders PSG by 12 points and second-place Lens by 10 points amidst a difficult run of form.
