Dan Burn Sustains Broken Rib and Punctured Lung

Injury Update

Newcastle United’s defender Dan Burn is expected to face a significant recovery period following a broken rib and a punctured lung sustained during the recent derby match against Sunderland.

During the first half, a collision occurred between Burn and Sunderland’s right-back Nordi Mukiele, which led to Burn’s injuries as Newcastle suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light.

Mukiele received a yellow card for the challenge that resulted in Burn being forced off the field shortly afterward.

Medical Assessment

Despite initially trying to continue after receiving prompt medical attention, Burn was substituted a few minutes later by Fabian Schar. Head coach Eddie Howe confirmed that Burn was taken to the hospital at halftime due to difficulties in breathing.

A punctured lung, a serious condition where air leaks into the space between the lung and the chest wall, can lead to the lung collapsing. Howe is anticipated to share more details regarding Burn’s condition during a press briefing on Tuesday. The prognosis suggests that Burn is likely to miss several matches throughout the festive season and into the start of the new year.

Team Impact

In light of this injury, Eddie Howe expressed concern about the defensive lineup, noting, “We’re stretched in our backline. We have a number of injuries which is worrying for us. It’s not an ideal situation currently, and we are facing quite a few challenges.”

Previously, center-back Sven Botman was ruled out due to a back issue, while Kieran Trippier is recovering from a hamstring injury, and Emil Krafth is still sidelined with a knee injury.

Moving forward, it appears Schar will team up with Malick Thiaw for the upcoming Carabao Cup quarter-final against Fulham at St James’ Park. Unfortunately, Newcastle’s squad offers minimal experienced alternatives to support the limited options available amid the current defensive crisis, particularly impacting full-backs Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, who have only recently returned from their own injuries.
