Chelseas Downfall: Identifying the Culprits and Assessing the Severity

Decline for Chelsea: Are Rosenior’s Blues Facing a Crisis?

A Rough Patch

Chelsea’s situation has worsened following their recent 3-0 defeat to Everton, marking a significant downturn for the team. They now face a two-week international break during which they must reflect on a challenging ten days.

This latest loss compounds their woes after being eliminated from the Champions League with an aggregate defeat of 8-2 to Paris Saint-Germain. The Blues are now experiencing consecutive losses in the Premier League, with no wins across their last four matches in all competitions.

The pressure is mounting on head coach Liam Rosenior, especially after vice-captain Enzo Fernandez expressed concern over the team’s loss of “identity, structure, and direction” since the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca in January. Fernandez’s comments, combined with his approach to Rosenior post-match, highlight the growing unease within the squad.

Chelsea’s match at Hill Dickinson Stadium against Everton showcased their weaknesses, as they struggled defensively and fell victim to errors, allowing Everton to dominate.

Despite the challenges, Chelsea holds sixth place in the Premier League, only a point behind fifth-placed Liverpool in the pursuit of a Champions League spot. However, Everton’s recent success keeps them only two points behind Chelsea, intensifying the competition as the season nears its end.

“I choose to ignore the external noise,” Rosenior commented on BBC Match of the Day. “I understand our current situation and what we can achieve, which can still be significant. It’s been a demanding phase for the players, and we need to regroup and come back stronger.”

Does Rosenior Know His Most Effective Lineup?

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin highlighted during a BBC Radio 5 Live session that the club isn’t leveraging its players’ potential. He emphasized the need to determine why this situation exists, asserting that it remains unacceptable in the Premier League.

Rosenior has faced backlash for his frequent player rotations; Chelsea has seen 99 player changes in the Premier League this season. Under the current management, the rotation has increased, particularly in the goalkeeping position, where Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have been interchanged. Sanchez’s recent performances, particularly against Everton, have been subpar, including a significant error that nearly cost the team a goal.

Criticism has also been directed at other squad members, including defender Wesley Fofana. Star players such as Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have struggled to produce results, leading to three consecutive scoreless games for the club.

“I must improve my decisions regarding team selections, how we mix things up, and ensure we are competitive,” Rosenior admitted on BBC Radio 5 Live. “The international break is timely for us to reassess and refocus. We have weeks ahead to refine our training and strategies.”

Who Should Be Held Responsible?

Prior to the final whistle in their latest game, a number of Chelsea supporters left the stadium expressing discontent with the ownership. Rosenior approached the remaining fans to thank them for their support, yet some view his tenure as a reflection of broader issues within the club’s leadership.

Following home fixtures against Port Vale in the FA Cup and Manchester City, fans of Chelsea and affiliated club Strasbourg, which is owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, are planning to demonstrate before a match against Manchester United on April 18th.

Nevin noted that Everton fought with a determination that exposed Chelsea’s vulnerabilities. The reasons behind the team’s struggles—such as potential disengagement from the manager, player exhaustion, or simply being outperformed on the day—remain unclear.

Are These Critiques Justified?

Chelsea’s defeat to Everton has resulted in three losses in their last four Premier League games, matching the defeats recorded in their previous 18 outings. They also failed to score in three consecutive matches across all competitions for the first time since September 2023, despite totaling 52 attempts on goal (with 16 on target).

The team’s difficulty in front of goal has coincided with disturbing defensive lapses, conceding the first goal in four straight matches—a first since November 2023. Throughout the season, Chelsea has been outrun by every opponent in each match.

“We have played ten Premier League matches since I’ve been here and accumulated 17 points,” Rosenior stated on Match of the Day. “We are not as far gone as many seem to believe—but we need to emerge from this slump quickly.”

Despite the recent setbacks, since Rosenior took charge, Chelsea ranks fourth in the Premier League form table with five wins in ten games. Only Manchester United, Arsenal, and Manchester City have earned more points in that timeframe.

Wayne Rooney, who served as Rosenior’s assistant at Derby County, expressed sympathy toward Rosenior, suggesting he faces undue criticism. “I think he has been treated unfairly since his appointment,” Rooney remarked. “Liam understands the pressure to deliver results. He started well, but now it’s about finding a way to navigate through this rough patch. He’s an excellent coach but needs time.”

Importance of Champions League Qualification

Reclaiming a spot in the Champions League is crucial for Chelsea’s future, as it holds significant prestige. Without qualification, Chelsea could struggle to attract essential transfer targets, as shown by striker Liam Delap’s decision to favor their club over Manchester United due to Champions League opportunities.

The financial implications of qualifying are also substantial, as it represents the most considerable revenue source for top clubs, surpassing income from Europa League or Conference League matches. This is particularly vital for Chelsea, who currently lacks a long-term shirt sponsor and operates from the outdated Stamford Bridge, which cannot compete with the modern stadiums of their rivals.

The pursuit of a Champions League berth was identified as a primary target for the club under former manager Maresca, a goal that now falls on Rosenior’s shoulders to achieve.
