ASEC Mimosas Stun Holders TP Mazembe In CAF Women’s Champions League
Debutants ASEC Mimosas announced their arrival in the CAF Women’s Champions League by pulling off a 1-0 victory over defending champions TP Mazembe at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia on Sunday.
The win leaves the Congolese side’s title defence hanging in the balance after a tense opening to their continental campaign.
After a cagey first half dominated by defensive discipline from both sides, ASEC broke the deadlock in the 66th minute.
A team move down the right flank ended with Habibou Ouédraogo arriving at the perfect moment to slot home the decisive goal.
The result adds to a growing list of early upsets in the CAF Women’s Champions League history, following Ampem Darkoa’s 2-1 victory over AS FAR in 2023 and FC Masar’s shock 1-0 win against Mamelodi Sundowns in 2024.
In the day’s other Group B fixture, JKT Queens of Tanzania battled to a hard-fought goalless draw against Gaborone United from Botswana, thanks to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Najiata Abass Idrisa.
Up next, TP Mazembe will seek redemption when they face Gaborone United on Tuesday, while ASEC Mimosas will take on JKT Queens in another crucial clash on Wednesday.
