Achraf Hakimi of PSG Faces Legal Proceedings Over Rape Accusation

Achraf Hakimi to Face Trial Following Rape Allegation

PSG Defender Ordered to Stand Trial

Achraf Hakimi, the defender for Paris Saint-Germain, has been instructed to appear in court concerning a rape allegation, which he addressed via social media on Tuesday.

Background of the Allegation

The claim originates from February 2023, presented by a 24-year-old woman who accused Hakimi of assaulting her at his residence located in the southeast region of Paris. Hakimi, who refutes the claims, expressed his thoughts on social media, stating, “Today, a rape accusation is enough to justify a trial. This is as unjust to the innocent as it is to the genuine victims. I calmly await this trial, which will allow the truth to come out publicly.”

Both the prosecutor in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, and Hakimi’s attorney, Fanny Colin, have confirmed that the trial has been scheduled.

Plaintiff’s Response

Rachel-Flore Pardo, the attorney representing the complainant, conveyed her client’s relief at the decision to proceed with the trial, asserting that the move aligns with the evidence presented.

Legal Proceedings

Hakimi was placed under preliminary charges of rape in March 2023. In the French legal framework, such charges indicate that there is substantial cause for suspicion, yet further inquiries may be necessary before determining if the case will proceed to trial.

Colin criticized the basis for the trial, pointing out that the allegation hinges solely on the plaintiff’s testimony, which she claimed obstructed investigations by declining medical examinations, DNA tests, and providing access to her mobile phone as well as the identity of a crucial witness. She further noted that two psychological evaluations of the complainant showed a lack of clarity concerning the alleged events and indicated no signs of trauma.

Commentary on Broader Implications

Pardo emphasized that while the justice system has operated effectively in this instance, the case underscores the ongoing challenges within the realm of professional men’s football regarding the Me Too movement’s impact.

PSG’s Reaction

Ahead of the upcoming match against Monaco, PSG head coach Luis Enrique addressed inquiries regarding whether the situation affects Hakimi’s status within the team as vice-captain. He responded simply: “This is in the hands of the justice system.”
