Hugo Broos has set the tone for South Africa’s 2025 AFCON campaign by blending experience with new energy in his provisional squad.

The Bafana Bafana coach has recalled Themba Zwane despite the 36-year-old enduring a stop-start season with injuries.

Broos sought clarity on the midfielder’s fitness from the Mamelodi Sundowns technical team and received encouraging updates before finalizing his list.

The squad features 54 players, giving Broos the room to assess both proven performers and the emerging talents introduced over the past year.

Key figures from South Africa’s third place finish at the last AFCON have been retained, including captain Ronwen Williams and defensive pillars like Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba.

Regular contributors in midfield and attack, such as Teboho Mokoena, Sphephelo Sithole, Evidence Makgopa, and Elias Mokwana, also return.

South Africa will enter Group B knowing they face familiar Southern African rivals in Zimbabwe and Angola, alongside Egypt.

Their campaign begins against Angola on December 22 before clashes with Egypt and Zimbabwe later in the month.
