Zimbabwe’s preparations for their World Cup qualifier against South Africa have been rocked by drama after assistant coach Takesure Chiragwi resigned in disgrace.

The Ngezi Platinum Stars manager stepped down from his national team role just days before the Warriors’ clash with Bafana Bafana.

This development comes following a shocking on-field altercation that went viral over the weekend.

During Saturday’s Premier Soccer League clash between Ngezi Platinum and Dynamos FC, TV cameras captured Chiragwi slapping his own player, McDonald Makuwe, in full view of the crowd.

The ugly moment unfolded after Dynamos equalised in the 32nd minute. Chiragwi, furious over the referee’s decision, stormed the touchline in protest.

Makuwe reportedly tried to calm him down. But instead of backing off, the coach lashed out and slapped the midfielder.

The incident sparked outrage across Zimbabwean football.

Fans and pundits condemned the behaviour as “disgraceful” and “unacceptable.”

Facing mounting criticism, Chiragwi issued a public apology through NewsDay Zimbabwe, admitting his actions were indefensible.

“I wish to sincerely and unreservedly apologise for my regrettable conduct during the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Rufaro Stadium,” he said.

“My actions were inappropriate and unbecoming of a coach, leader, and representative of the game. I deeply apologise to McDonald Makuwe and the entire football community.”

Chiragwi confirmed he would no longer serve as Michael Nees’s first assistant in the Warriors’ technical setup, effectively ending his stint with the national side.

His resignation leaves Zimbabwe scrambling for a replacement ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

The will take place on Friday, 10 October, at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
