Zambia Coach Hospitalised With Food Poisoning Ahead Of Angola Friendly

Zambia’s preparations for their upcoming friendly have taken a hit after head coach Moses Sichone was hospitalised with food poisoning.

The 48-year-old, who was only appointed earlier this month, fell ill before what should have been his first game in charge against South Africa.

He missed the match in Gqeberha and was unable to travel with the squad to Angola for their next assignment.

A statement from the Football Association of Zambia confirmed that Sichone, midfielder Miguel Chaiwa and video analyst Elias Chipota were all admitted after their symptoms worsened.

“Moses Sichone, midfielder Miguel Chaiwa and video analyst Elias Chipota have been admitted to hospital following their worsened condition that was aggravated by fever, diarrhoea and vomiting,” the FA said.

“The Football Association of Zambia is working closely with its host association and the local medical authorities to ensure that the affected receive the best possible medical attention.”

FAZ general secretary Machacha Shepande later revealed that several other squad members had experienced similar symptoms but had since recovered.

The team went on to lose 3-1 to South Africa before continuing their tour with assistant Perry Mutapa taking over as acting coach.

Sichone steps into the role following the exit of Avram Grant after a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign.

Zambia are placed in Group A for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco, where they will face Mali, Comoros and the hosts.
