The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has named French football expert Yvon Avry as its new Technical Director, ending months of speculation over who would fill the key position left vacant by Benjamin Kumwenda.

Avry, who boasts a UEFA A Licence and decades of international experience, topped a global recruitment process that drew 17 applicants.

Three finalists were grilled by a FAM panel on 23 September 2025, with the Frenchman emerging as the clear choice.

FAM officials say Avry impressed with his strong technical background and a clear blueprint that fits the association’s long-term “Transforming the Game” strategy.

The 58-year-old coach has worked across Africa and Asia.

He previously served as Technical Advisor for Madagascar’s football federation and Technical Director for Fosa Juniors FC.

While his stint in Brunei saw him lay the foundation for youth and coaching development programs.

Between 2007 and 2021, Avry also worked as a FIFA Technical Consultant and Instructor, helping shape grassroots and coaching frameworks in several countries.

He officially starts his new role on 3 November 2025, overseeing all technical and development programs for Malawi’s national teams and domestic structures.

FAM says the appointment marks a “new chapter” in its push to professionalize football development, with Avry expected to modernize coaching systems and strengthen the country’s talent pipeline.
