D.R Congo forward Yoane Wissa is edging closer to a comeback. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed that the striker could rejoin the squad by mid-November.
The 29-year-old suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury while representing his country shortly after joining from Brentford but has now begun light training on grass as part of his recovery.
“We’ve seen Yoane back on the grass,” Howe said ahead of Newcastle’s clash with Brighton.
“It’s the first time on the grass, which is great to see. He’s reacted pretty well to that work so far. Now, it’s a case of trying to step him up naturally.”
Wissa will likely miss DR Congo’s World Cup qualifying playoffs next month but could still feature for the Leopards at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, starting on December 21.
DR Congo’s first game comes two days later against Benin.
Howe refused to weigh in on whether Wissa should sit out the tournament, saying his main concern is ensuring the player makes a full recovery.
