World Cup Play-Off: Osimhen Inspires Nigeria Past Gabon To Reach Final

Nigeria booked their place in the final of the African play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

Despite dominating much of the match, the Super Eagles were made to wait until extra time to seal the win.

Akor Adams put Nigeria ahead in the 78th minute after capitalising on a defensive error, but Mario Lemina’s late deflected strike sent the tie into extra time.

From there, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead before Victor Osimhen took over with a powerful display.

The Napoli striker, who missed several chances earlier in the game, struck twice in extra time, ripping off his mask and shirt in an emotional celebration after his first goal.

Osimhen’s brace takes his international tally to 31 goals, leaving him just six behind the late Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s all-time top scorer.

Nigeria will now face either Cameroon or DR Congo in Sunday’s play-off final (19:00 GMT), with the winner advancing to the intercontinental qualifiers in March, which will decide the last two spots for the 2026 World Cup.
