Middlesbrough Denies Wolves’ Request for Edwards

Middlesbrough’s Strong Stance on Their Manager

Middlesbrough has turned down an inquiry from Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding their head coach, Rob Edwards. Reports from BBC Sport indicated that Wolves, currently at the bottom of the Premier League, expressed interest in Edwards as they look to fill the managerial position following the dismissal of Vitor Pereira.

The decision by Middlesbrough comes as Wolves, in search of a successor after a poor start to the league season, sought permission to speak with Edwards. Middlesbrough, however, remains resolute in their desire to retain the services of the 42-year-old.

Background on Edwards and Current Situation

BBC Sport pointed out that, since Pereira’s sacking, Edwards quickly emerged as a leading candidate to take over at Wolves, competing with former manager Gary O’Neil for the role. Despite engaging in discussions, O’Neil opted out of consideration.

Edwards, a former player for Wolves, stands out as a preferred choice, backed by his successful history at Luton Town. His position at Middlesbrough, currently ranked third in the Championship, makes his departure unlikely.

Middlesbrough would demand a substantial compensation fee should Wolves pursue Edwards further, considering he only joined the club this past June.

Wolves’ Struggles Continue

Wolves remain in a challenging predicament, having accumulated only two points from ten matches this season, leaving them eight points behind the safety line occupied by Burnley. Their next challenge is a match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Edwards’ Previous Experience

Edwards made significant contributions to Wolves during his playing career, featuring in over 100 matches from 2004 to 2008. After transitioning away from playing, he held various coaching roles at the club, even serving as interim manager in 2016.

His coaching career includes a tenure at Forest Green Rovers in 2021, and a brief period as head coach at Watford, which ended prematurely after just 11 fixtures. Edwards became Luton’s head coach in November 2022 and notably led them to their first-ever promotion to the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Luton, they faced relegation from the top flight in May 2024, and Edwards departed during the following season. Middlesbrough hired him on a three-year contract in light of Michael Carrick’s exit.
