Possible Managerial Changes This Summer

Anticipated Managerial Departures

A potential overhaul of coaching staff could be on the horizon as clubs prepare for the summer. Factors like expiring contracts and notable competitions are fueling speculation. Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is set to exit at the conclusion of the season, while Manchester United’s Michael Carrick is currently on a short-term deal expiring in June.

As international teams experience changes post-World Cup, this summer may offer plenty of opportunities for clubs looking for fresh leadership. According to ex-Manchester City player Nedum Onuoha, fans are likely to wonder about available managers and prospects as the tournament unfolds: “The World Cup adds an interesting dynamic. It seems like the right time for several managerial shifts to happen alongside many players trying to prove themselves.”

With this in mind, let’s explore who is currently available and who may be soon looking for new positions.

Premier League Managers on the Move

Recently, Crystal Palace coach Glasner announced his departure at the end of the season. Although he received a contract renewal offer last summer, he declined to extend his stay, informing chairman Steve Parish in October of his decision.

Fulham’s Marco Silva is also facing a contract expiration at the season’s end. Since taking over in 2021, he has successfully guided Fulham from the Championship back to the Premier League, achieving a record points tally last season.

Potential Job Openings

Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth similarly finds himself in a precarious position, with his future uncertain beyond this season unless an extension is agreed upon. Given his previous associations with clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea, he might be in high demand if he decides to pursue a new opportunity.

Managers At Risk Post-World Cup

Potential Departures

International tournaments can often lead to managerial changes, even without resignations or firings. Agreements nearing their end often spell the conclusion of tenures. Thomas Tuchel, who began his role as England manager last January on an 18-month contract, is slated to leave in July unless he opts to renew.

Tuchel has indicated he would consider extending his contract. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino, the former Tottenham boss, is steering the United States team but will conclude his role after the World Cup.

On another note, Didier Deschamps is representing France for his fourth World Cup. Having led his team to victory in 2018 and the finals in 2022, his current contract only lasts until the end of the tournament.

The Job Market for Managers

As several notable figures currently seek opportunities, the managerial landscape is poised for evolution. Gareth Southgate, once manager of the England national team, is available after stepping down following a loss in the Euro 2024 final. In November, when approached regarding a return to management at Manchester United, he expressed that it wasn’t a priority.

Another name in the mix is Xabi Alonso, who left Real Madrid after a brief stint, having won 24 of 34 matches during his management.

Zinedine Zidane, who has not been in a managerial role since his exit from Real Madrid in 2021, is rumored to be a contender for the French national team position when Deschamps leaves.

Additionally, Enzo Maresca, having recently parted ways with Chelsea, and former bosses Ange Postecoglou and Edin Terzic are also currently seeking new positions. Lastly, Joachim Low, who last managed Germany, has yet to accept a new role since his departure in 2021.

In the coming months, fans and clubs alike will be watching closely as these coaching changes unfold.
