‘Don’t be misled’ by Carrick’s ‘composure’ – Rooney

Rooney’s Perspective on Carrick’s Role

Wayne Rooney has shared insights on Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach for Manchester United, expressing confidence in Carrick’s ability to stabilize the team, while cautioning fans against underestimating his demeanor.

United recently announced Carrick would lead the squad for the remainder of the season, taking over from Ruben Amorim. Rooney, who played alongside Carrick at Old Trafford—making 366 appearances together and securing five Premier League titles—thinks highly of his former teammate.

“Michael’s a lot of fun and has a great personality, but don’t let his calmness deceive you,” Rooney commented during a recent episode of his podcast. “He brings a lightheartedness, but he approaches this role with utmost seriousness.”

Carrick, who has a notable history with Manchester United—amassing 464 matches during a 12-year career—had a brief yet impactful stint as caretaker manager in 2021, where he achieved two victories and one draw. He previously managed Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025.

“This seems like the most sensible option right now, especially given the lack of top-tier managers available,” Rooney stated. “It’s a challenging situation, as Manchester United is currently in a tough spot, and Michael’s task is to bring some stability.”

Carrick’s Calm and Determined Approach

Presently, Manchester United finds itself seventh in the Premier League standings, having clinched only one win in their last six outings. Carrick’s inaugural challenge awaits on Saturday when Manchester City visits Old Trafford.

“It’s a crucial match not just for the club but for Michael as well,” Rooney said. He believes Carrick will infuse a greater sense of composure and tenacity into the team’s gameplay. “Given the caliber of Manchester City, it’s going to be a tough contest. Yet, history shows that Manchester United can prevail if they perform at their best, and I hope for that this Saturday.”

Carrick and Holland: A Focus on Organization

In adding to his coaching staff, Carrick has brought aboard Steve Holland as his assistant, who previously served under England’s national team. Along with Holland, the coaching team includes Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.

Rooney expressed admiration for Holland’s tactical acumen displayed during his tenure with the England national team, where they achieved a fourth-place finish in the 2018 World Cup and were runners-up in both Euro 2020 and 2024.

“I was struck by how well he managed training sessions while with England. He was the one orchestrating activities, allowing Gareth Southgate to focus more on other managerial responsibilities,” Rooney noted. “Together, Michael and Steve will bring a structured approach to Manchester United’s gameplay, and I anticipate they’ll make the team harder to break down.”
