Wayne Rooney Urges Manchester United to Make Michael Carrick Their Permanent Manager
Carrick Strengthens Case for Permanent Manchester United Position
Wayne Rooney Advocates for Carrick’s Appointment
Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to appoint Michael Carrick as the permanent manager following their 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. With this win, United currently secures a spot in third place in the Premier League.
Since taking temporary charge in January, Carrick has led the team to seven wins out of nine matches. His record of six consecutive home victories is only surpassed by coaching greats like Sven Goran Eriksson, Carlo Ancelotti, and Manuel Pellegrini in their inaugural Premier League tenures.
United management intends to explore all potential options before making a final decision this summer. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a minority owner, refrained from commenting on Carrick’s future during a recent visit to Shanghai before the Chinese Grand Prix, but acknowledged Carrick’s commendable performance. Rooney, who was on holiday with Carrick when managerial changes occurred, expressed his firm belief in Carrick’s capabilities.
“Absolutely, he deserves the role,” Rooney stated on BBC Radio 5 Live. “I expected great things from Michael Carrick. I have a deep understanding of his character and demeanor. It was vital to have someone who knows the environment. The players required support, and he has provided just that.”
He continued, “We’ve witnessed an improvement in their play, with more cohesion as a team. They appear to be a formidable unit. Why would anyone consider changing that?”
While Carrick generally avoids commenting on Rooney’s praises, he remains focused on the tasks at hand, filtering out any distractions.
“It’s not particularly noisy, is it?” Carrick remarked. “I don’t refer to Wayne; I mean it in broader terms. It’s only noise if you choose to listen, and it’s not affecting me at all.”
Carrick confirmed he consulted with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox after the match against Villa, yet his attention is firmly on the upcoming match against Bournemouth.
“I’m here in this role, striving to give it my best, and I genuinely enjoy it,” Carrick said. “Whatever the future holds will happen. For now, we can relish this win and look ahead to Friday night. That’s the sole focus for me.”
Fernandes Breaks Assist Record for United
Bruno Fernandes, the captain, was instrumental in United’s success against Aston Villa, setting the stage for the first two goals. His near-post corner was converted by Casemiro for the opener. After Aston Villa leveled the score, Fernandes delivered an incisive pass to Matheus Cunha, who secured the lead for United.
With this performance, Fernandes reached 100 assists for Manchester United across all competitions, becoming only the fourth player to achieve this during the Premier League era, joining the ranks of Rooney, Ryan Giggs, and David Beckham.
Additionally, his tally of 16 assists in the league this season surpasses Beckham’s 15 from the 1999-2000 season, setting a new record for United.
“Bruno has consistently made a significant impact in crucial situations, whether scoring or assisting,” Carrick noted. “His connection with Casemiro is something that is innate; it cannot be taught.”
As rumors circulate regarding Fernandes possibly leaving the club this summer when his contract has one year remaining, the 31-year-old is determined to compete at the highest level, making Champions League qualification vital.
“Bruno is undoubtedly a key player for us, and it would be unfortunate to lose him,” Carrick asserted. “While I can’t delve too deeply into the situation, he remains incredibly important to our team.”
Old Trafford Fans Call for Casemiro’s Continuation
Veteran player Casemiro has made a significant impact this season, scoring seven goals, with at least six headers, more than any other player in the league. He celebrated his second-half goal by gesturing to the badge in front of the Stretford End, eliciting chants of “one more year” from the fans, a sentiment repeated by supporters at the final whistle.
Although Casemiro confirmed he plans to depart United this summer as his contract ends, there have been expressions of interest from both the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer following the World Cup, where he is set to captain the Brazilian national team.
Despite fan appeals for him to stay, Carrick appears skeptical about that possibility.
“The decision seems to simplify things,” Carrick stated. “Everyone comprehends the situation. The connection he has with the supporters is significant, and he will cherish that.”
He added, “Casemiro has been exceptional, a crucial player for us, and has influenced the dressing room positively. However, players come and go; this is a club in constant evolution. It’s not simply a matter of finding like-for-like replacements, as different paths may be taken.”
