Wayne Rooney Highlights Pogba as One of Manchester Uniteds Oddest Acquisitions Before INEOS Takeover

Rooney Critiques Manchester United’s Recruitment Strategy

Pogba Among Noteworthy Signings

Wayne Rooney has pointed out Paul Pogba as one of the three most unusual acquisitions made by Manchester United prior to the INEOS takeover, expressing his discontent with the club’s approach to signing high-profile players.

Pogba, at the age of 32, rejoined Manchester United from Juventus in the summer of 2016 for a then-club record transfer fee estimated at £89 million.

Criticism of Recruitment Policy

Unfortunately for the midfielder, he failed to justify the hefty price tag, facing criticism for various off-field issues before making his return to Juventus in 2022.

During a recent episode of “The Overlap Fan Debate,” Rooney was candid about his opinions regarding the club’s recruitment practices prior to INEOS’s ownership.

  • “The recruitment at Manchester United before last summer was horrendous,”* he remarked.

“They were just bringing big names in—look at Lukaku, Zlatan, Pogba—they’re talented players, but the focus was on attracting names and spending staggering sums. It will require time to rectify those errors.”
