Watzke Evaluates Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga Campaign
Positive Performance Overshadowed by Key Setback
Borussia Dortmund has displayed commendable form in the Bundesliga, yet they remain in the formidable shadow of FC Bayern Munich. The club’s president, Hans-Joachim Watzke, reflects on the season with a blend of optimism and disappointment, highlighting a particular match that stands out as the pivotal failure.
Consistent Results Amidst Competition
With 61 points accumulated over 27 matches, Dortmund has shown the kind of consistency not seen in recent years. “Our performance in the Bundesliga has been quite impressive,” Watzke noted in a discussion with Sky. He referenced the team’s achievements, stating, “I believe we haven’t gathered this many points since around 2016.” Under different circumstances, such a score would typically position a team at the top of the league.
The Unyielding Dominance of Bayern
However, this season, even that strong performance is insufficient, as Dortmund trails Bayern by nine points, who appear to be on a relentless path to securing the championship title. Watzke emphasized, “The key issue is that Bayern ultimately dictate if you can stake a claim for the German championship.”
Bayern’s Remarkable Strength and Domination
Additionally, Watzke expressed admiration for Bayern’s current form, stating, “To me, Bayern are the premier team in Europe at the moment.” He particularly praised their commanding victory against Atalanta Bergamo in the Champions League, saying, “I was rarely so pleased with a Bayern victory, due to its clarity and dominance.”
Early Exit from European Competition Haunts Dortmund
While Bayern continues to pursue glory on multiple fronts and prepares to face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, Dortmund’s journey in international competition ended prematurely. Watzke views this as the main blemish on their season, remarking, “The season certainly has its flaws; there’s no reason to sugarcoat it.”
Painful Dismissal Against Atalanta
The loss against Atalanta was especially painful, particularly due to the match’s circumstances. Following a 2:0 victory in the first leg, Dortmund experienced an unforeseen collapse, suffering a 1:4 defeat in the return match. “We had an off day, and that was our downfall in Bergamo,” Watzke reflected. The lingering disappointment is palpable, given that it seemed they might advance: “It felt like we were going to push it into extra time.”
Limited Success in Domestic Cups
In addition to their Champions League exit, Dortmund faced another disappointment in the DFB-Pokal, getting eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen. With these setbacks, the league is now their sole focus, and even with a solid performance, it may not suffice to achieve a top finish.
