Ollie Watkins Calls for Team Wake-Up at Halftime in Europa League Victory
Ollie Watkins revealed that he needed to rally his Aston Villa teammates during halftime to secure their 3-1 first-leg win against Bologna in the Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday.
First Half Challenges
Aston Villa faced significant pressure in the first half from Bologna, who had a goal from Santiago Castro disallowed for offside, and Lewis Ferguson’s shot hit the crossbar. However, Villa held their ground, with Ezri Konsa heading in the opening goal just before the break.
Key Goals in the Second Half
After halftime, Watkins extended Villa’s lead, but a late goal from Jonathan Rowe appeared to give Bologna hope as they aimed to reduce the deficit before the second leg at Villa Park. However, in stoppage time, Watkins netted again to re-establish a two-goal cushion.
Despite Bologna registering 19 attempts on goal and having more possession, Watkins acknowledged that Villa were fortunate to head into halftime with a lead.
“It was huge,” he explained. “In the first half, they were really putting us under pressure and seemed to dominate. We got lucky, and at halftime, I told the guys we needed to wake up. If that disallowed goal had stood and we stayed at 1-0, it could have been a long way back.”
Outstanding Performance
With his latest goal, Watkins reached a total of 12 goals for the season in all competitions, positioning Aston Villa advantageously for the possibility of reaching their second European semifinal in three years.
“As the season progresses, I’m feeling ready to go,” he added. “I’m eager for the upcoming matches. Scoring that late goal alleviates some tension, and with a two-goal advantage coming back to Villa Park, we can make it tough for them. We need to keep pushing forward.”
Managerial Reflections
The victory marked Aston Villa’s eighth consecutive win in the Europa League, although manager Unai Emery acknowledged that his team had a few lucky breaks, particularly in the first half.
“I’m pleased but we need balance,” he stated. “This result is fantastic, but while I can feel good about aspects of our performance over 90 minutes, there were areas we could improve upon.”
Emery noted that the first half was somewhat timid and the team’s performance was better than their display might suggest. The second half, however, showed a notable shift as they began to dominate and control the game as initially planned.
“They did score on us when we were feeling confident, but we responded excellently with the last corner and secured another goal.”
Looking Ahead
As Aston Villa prepares to host Bologna in the second leg, they are considered strong favorites to advance. However, Emery cautioned against complacency.
“It’s an excellent result, but we still have the second leg to play, and I know they are a dangerous team because of how well they compete,” he cautioned. “We must respect them and stick to our new plan for the game.”
