Manchester United’s Remarkable Turnaround
Manchester United has experienced an impressive revival in 2026 following a disappointing year in 2025, which saw them face numerous challenges under the leadership of former manager Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils ended the previous Premier League season in 15th place and suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
A New Direction
To address the club’s struggles, INEOS made significant investments in the squad during the summer transfer window. Although the team’s performances showed early promise this season, results remained uneven, prompting the club to dismiss the Portuguese manager in January.
United appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager for the remainder of the season, a decision that has proven beneficial. Under Carrick’s guidance, the team advanced to third place in the league standings, recording seven victories in ten matches.
With the prospect of qualifying for the next season’s Champions League becoming more attainable, United is gearing up for a busy summer. While the midfield is expected to receive upgrades, defensive concerns persist.
United’s Defensive Challenges
In recent league campaigns, United has allowed 50 or more goals in three of the last four seasons. The last season saw them concede 54 goals across 38 Premier League matches, with set pieces exposing their vulnerabilities.
This year, the defense has shown some improvement, having conceded 43 goals in 31 league matches. Since switching back to a four-man defense under Carrick, they have conceded just 11 goals in 10 games coached by the English manager.
However, the club may need to pursue defensive reinforcements in the summer, despite Harry Maguire nearing an extension of his contract. The veteran defender recently turned 34, raising concerns about his sustainability at this level.
Additionally, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have faced fitness challenges, while young players Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are still developing their careers. Consequently, United has been linked with several defenders and appears to be considering a rising star from the Bundesliga.
Interest in Waldemar Anton
Reports from Sky Sports Germany indicate that Manchester United is interested in signing Waldemar Anton, a defender from Borussia Dortmund. According to the report, both Atlético Madrid and Manchester United have expressed interest in the German international’s situation, along with Aston Villa.
Los Rojiblancos have been long-time admirers of Anton, believing he could suit Diego Simeone’s system. The La Liga club, along with Bayer Leverkusen, also previously looked at Anton before he transferred to Signal Iduna Park from VfB Stuttgart in 2024.
The 29-year-old is highly regarded at Dortmund and could bring stability and leadership to United’s defense. This season, Anton has made 37 appearances for his club in all competitions, netting three goals, all while being a starter.
Waldemar Anton’s 2025/26 Season Performance
Anton is contracted until 2028, and Borussia Dortmund is reportedly looking to offer him a new deal.
Final Thoughts
As Anton approaches his 30th birthday this summer, even if he makes a swift positive impact at Manchester United, he may not serve as a long-term replacement for Maguire. Therefore, targeting a younger, proven center-back in the Premier League, such as Nathan Collins, could be a wiser strategy for the club.
