Vinicius Jr’s Struggles Under Xabi Alonso Despite Real Madrid’s Strong Start
Vinicius Jr has yet to complete a full match for Real Madrid this season under the management of Xabi Alonso, causing visible frustration for the player and making waves in the Spanish press, despite the team’s successful start to the season.
The 25-year-old Brazilian, known for his goals in the Champions League finals during Real Madrid’s victories in 2022 and 2024, has been substituted in 10 out of the 12 matches played since Alonso took over in June, following Carlo Ancelotti’s exit.
Benchings and Substitutions
Vinicius found himself starting on the bench in two matches, including last week’s Champions League opening match against Olympique de Marseille.
This past Saturday’s game against Espanyol shed light on his perplexing situation. Although Vinicius was a consistent threat on the left wing, assisting Kylian Mbappe’s goal and nearly scoring himself when he struck the post, Alonso opted to substitute him. The Brazilian left the field visibly upset with his coach’s decision.
Discrepancies in Playing Time
The data surrounding his playing time has intensified the discussion, as Vinicius remains the second-most involved player in goals for Real Madrid, yet finds himself ranked 10th in total minutes played.
When questioned about his rotation strategy during a press conference, Alonso maintained a tactful stance while acknowledging Vinicius’s dissatisfaction.
Manager’s Response
“I was once a player myself, and I didn’t appreciate being substituted either. I don’t see it as a problem when players express their frustration,” Alonso commented ahead of Tuesday’s LaLiga match against Levante.
“The season is still in its early stages, and I’m pleased with Vinicius’s contributions. We need everyone’s efforts, and there’s certainly room for improvement in our attacking play,” the manager added.
Top of the League
Despite the unrest surrounding Vinicius, Real Madrid’s results have remained unaffected as they hold the top position in LaLiga with 15 points from five matches, maintaining a two-point lead over reigning champions Barcelona.
