Vincenzo Grifo Celebrates Nils Petersen as He Breaks Freiburgs Bundesliga Scoring Record
Vincenzo Grifo Achieves Club Milestone as Freiburg’s All-Time Leading Scorer
Historic Penalty Secures Record
Vincenzo Grifo’s successful conversion from the penalty line during Saturday’s high-scoring Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg marked a significant milestone in his career. The 32-year-old forward netted his 70th Bundesliga goal for Freiburg, earning him the title of the club’s all-time leading goal scorer. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 69 league goals held by club legend Nils Petersen, who played for the Schwarzwaldverein from 2015 to 2023.
All-Time Goals Total
While Grifo has now taken the lead in Bundesliga goals, Petersen still retains the overall record for most goals scored for Freiburg across all competitions, with 105 goals compared to Grifo’s 103. However, it is likely that Grifo will soon close in on this record as well. During interviews in the mixed zone after the match, Grifo sported Petersen’s former No. 18 jersey, highlighting the respectful connection the two players share.
A Special Connection
“We’ve been in touch quite a bit lately,” Grifo shared with the media. “Nils offered me some incredibly kind words and really inspired me. He’s exactly the kind of person you’d expect—just a really great guy.”
Expressing his gratitude, Grifo added, “I was chasing this record but never thought I would achieve it before Christmas. It fills me with immense pride to be recognized as the record goal-scorer for a club that means so much to me. This definitely adds to the joy of the holiday season.”
