Villarreals Pursuit: Is a LaLiga Championship Within Reach?

Villarreal Secures Vital Win at Estadio Martínez Valero

Villarreal CF successfully claimed three points at the Estadio Martínez Valero, providing a strong statement to other teams competing for the title.

A Promising Start for Villarreal

The match began with Villarreal CF quickly taking the lead, as Alberto Moleiro scored just seven minutes into the game, followed by Georges Mikautadze doubling their advantage shortly after in the 13th minute. Despite Elche CF controlling possession, Martim Neto managed to reduce the deficit at the half-hour mark. However, Alfonso Pedraza secured the victory with his first league goal of the season in the closing phases of the match.

“We are thrilled to have triumphed over a formidable opponent like Elche CF in such a challenging environment,” Marcelino stated post-match. “Winning at a venue where no one else has succeeded is a significant accomplishment.”

The victory marked a return to winning ways for Villarreal, following three consecutive defeats across all competitions, including a discouraging home loss to FC Barcelona that raised doubts about their title ambitions.

Assessing Villarreal’s Title Prospects

While Villarreal CF currently trails FC Barcelona by 11 points, they still hold the potential for a title chase thanks to two games in hand. A positive outcome in the upcoming matches against Deportivo Alavés and a postponed match with Levante UD could reduce the gap to just one point behind second-placed Real Madrid.

El Submarino Amarillo is just one point shy of their best-ever point total (39) in the first half of a top-flight season. If they secure two points from their remaining fixtures, they will achieve a club record of 40 points before the season shifts into its second half.

“We’re at 38 points with two matches remaining in the first half of the season,” Marcelino continued. “That’s remarkable. We’ve only been defeated three times against the top teams. We should feel very proud.”

Villarreal has consistently performed well, suffering only three losses this season, fewer than both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. They have managed to win 12 out of 17 games so far. Notably, all defeats have come from title contenders FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético de Madrid, but they will host both Madrid teams later in the season. With an impressive home record of seven wins and just one loss at Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal has established a stronghold.

Defensive Strength and Upcoming Challenges

Villarreal boasts the best defense in LaLiga EA SPORTS, having conceded only 16 goals, while ranking third in offensive performance with 34 goals scored. Moleiro shines with seven goals and two assists, and goalkeeper Luiz Júnior has recorded seven clean sheets, second only to Thibaut Courtois’s eight.

After their morale-boosting victory against Elche CF, Villarreal is set to face Deportivo Alavés on Saturday. Historically, El Submarino Amarillo has performed well at home against El Glorioso, winning four of their last five encounters, with Deportivo Alavés managing just one draw and two losses in their recent league outings.

Despite Marcelino’s earlier comments suggesting it may be tough to contend with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona for the title, as well as the claim that sustaining such momentum could be “impossible,” his team’s performances indicate they have the capability to challenge other title aspirants. If Villarreal maintains their current form and wins their two games in hand, the fans certainly have reason to harbor high hopes as the new year unfolds.
