Villarreal Dominates Alaves in LaLiga, Narrowing the Gap to Title Contenders

Villarreal Overcomes Alaves in a Competitive Clash

Subpar First Half

Despite being the heavy favorites heading into the match, Villarreal found themselves struggling against Alaves, who are fighting to avoid relegation. The first half was marked by a distinct lack of quality from both teams.

While they didn’t generate many offensive chances, Alaves managed to maintain a strong defensive posture, limiting Villarreal, who had one of the highest goal-scoring records in La Liga this season.

Villarreal’s first notable opportunity came shortly after the 30-minute mark, with Georges Mikautadze’s shot from inside the box narrowly missing the target.

What stood out the most for Villarreal fans was the team’s inability to record a single shot on goal during the first 45 minutes. If they aimed to secure UEFA Champions League qualification, a far better performance was necessary in the second half.

Second Half Revival

Villarreal responded effectively, scoring two goals in quick succession shortly after the break. The first came in the 50th minute when Alberto Moleiro pounced on a loose ball just outside the penalty area, curling a beautiful right-footed shot into the top corner.

Just seven minutes later, Villarreal doubled their lead. Antonio Sivera attempted to clear a ball, inadvertently sending it into Gerard Moreno’s path, who struck it first-time into the bottom left corner of the net.

With the visiting team deflated, Villarreal solidified their victory in the final 15 minutes. Moleiro, who had already found the net, turned provider and assisted Mikautadze, who rounded off a strong second-half performance with a clever lob over the goalkeeper.

Alaves did manage to score a consolation goal through Toni Martinez late in the game, but it was not enough to impede Villarreal’s advance in the league standings.

Current Standings

Villarreal is still within reach of the title race, while Alaves dropped to 15th place, now just three points above the relegation zone.
