Victor Osimhen: From Napoli’s Golden Boy to Galatasaray’s Star Striker

Victor Osimhen, a footballer who once stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Erling Haaland, has surprisingly committed his prime years to Galatasaray. The Nigerian striking sensation had plans of joining Europe’s elite after his stint at Napoli, but a series of unforeseen circumstances led to his permanent transfer to Istanbul.

Snatched from Liverpool’s Grasp

Napoli’s sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, saw Osimhen as a fresh alternative to Erling Haaland, whom he had failed to sign from Red Bull Salzburg. Despite the strong interest from Liverpool, Giuntoli managed to secure Osimhen’s signature. A decision, former Napoli advisor Giandomenico Costi described as Giuntoli’s “biggest masterpiece”.

A Rising Star

Despite the hefty €80 million (£69m/$94m) transfer fee, Osimhen didn’t disappoint. With 26 goals in 32 appearances during the 2022-23 season, he played a pivotal role in Napoli winning their first Scudetto since the Diego Maradona era. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis even predicted that Osimhen was destined for a team like Real Madrid, PSG, or a top Premier League team. However, a contract offer from a top European side never came.

A Curious Case

While lesser players were being sold for more, not a single team from Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues was ready to meet Osimhen’s €75m (£65m/$88m) buy-out clause. Even Liverpool, who signed Hugo Ekitike for a higher fee, didn’t show interest in Osimhen. This lack of interest left many puzzled, including Osimhen himself.

Galatasaray’s Gain

With no other viable options, both Napoli and Osimhen had to accept Galatasaray’s offer to take the Nigerian on loan for a season. This move turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Osimhen as he ended up top scorer, helping Galatasaray secure their third consecutive title. His brilliant performance resulted in Galatasaray being the only European side willing to meet his buy-out clause, securing him on a permanent transfer.

Character Questions and Injury Concerns

Despite his exceptional performance on the pitch, rumours about Osimhen’s attitude off the pitch and his vulnerability to injuries might have deterred the interest of top European clubs. However, many who have worked with Osimhen, including ex-Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti, have described him as a humble and hard-working professional.

Galatasaray’s Ambition

Despite this unexpected turn of events, Osimhen seems content to be the face of an ambitious Galatasaray side. The Turkish team, with its quality players and Champions League aspirations, is growing in stature. Osimhen’s decision to stay was also influenced by the fan culture and growing standard of play in Turkish football.

While it may seem like a missed opportunity for Osimhen to not compete at the same level as Haaland, his choice to choose stability and form over big-name clubs might just be the right decision for his career.
