Victor Osimhen has written his name into Nigerian football history by becoming the nation’s leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League.

The Galatasaray striker returned from an ankle injury to score against Liverpool, converting a penalty after Dominik Szoboszlai handled the ball in the box.

His composed finish past Alisson Becker took his tally to 10 goals in the competition proper.

The strike moved him ahead of Obafemi Martins, who netted nine times in the Champions League, with one of his career total of 10 goals coming in the qualifying rounds.

Osimhen achieved the feat in just 18 appearances.

Behind the pair are Julius Aghahowa, Emmanuel Emenike, and Viktor Ikpeba, each with seven goals, while Ayegbeni Yakubu also boasts the same tally but in fewer appearances.

Other names on the list include Ahmed Musa, Brown Ideye, Nwankwo Kanu, and Emmanuel Dennis.

Osimhen’s record cements his status as Nigeria’s most prolific forward in Champions League history, and with more years ahead of him, the gap is likely to widen further.
