Victor Edvardsen Issues Apology for Mocking Angelo Stillers Cleft Lip Appearance
Player Penalized for Insulting Rivals’ Physical Appearance
Incident Overview
Go Ahead Eagles forward Victor Edvardsen has received a financial penalty for ridiculing the physical characteristics of an opposing player who was born with a cleft lip and palate. This incident transpired during a Europa League match against Stuttgart on Thursday.
Details of the Incident
Edvardsen mimicked Stuttgart’s midfielder Angelo Stiller’s nose, which is a distinct physical trait related to Stiller’s condition. A cleft lip occurs when parts of an infant’s face fail to properly fuse during prenatal development, and it can impact the shape of the nose.
Following the match, Edvardsen expressed his remorse to Stiller in the Stuttgart locker room. As a consequence of his actions, he has been fined €500 (approximately £432) by Go Ahead Eagles. The club has announced that the fine will be directed towards their social services fund.
Apology and Reaction
Edvardsen, who has represented Sweden at the national level, stated, “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions. Certain words and behaviors should never happen on a football pitch. As a professional player, I have a responsibility to set a good example.”
Jan Willem van Dop, the general manager of Go Ahead Eagles, remarked on the incident: “We are thoroughly disappointed with Victor’s actions and disassociate ourselves from them. Although his apology is welcomed, this incident will overshadow the event.”
Game Outcome
In the same match, Stuttgart secured a decisive victory, defeating Go Ahead Eagles by a score of 4-0 in their home country of the Netherlands.
