FK Arkadag Concludes Successful Season

As the year comes to a close, FK Arkadag wraps up its season in remarkable fashion. The club celebrated its championship triumph ahead of schedule during its third year, having secured the title well in advance of the season’s conclusion. In fact, the championship was all but decided before the campaign even kicked off.

A Streak of Victories

The Blue-Whites attribute their impressive record of over 82 wins in league play and 14 cup matches to a prominent supporter: Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

Despite being a relatively new club founded in 2023, thanks to the former president of Turkmenistan, Arkadag was immediately placed into the first league. This initiative, heavily backed by Berdimuhamedow, has allowed the team to maintain an unblemished record in every competitive match at the national level, largely due to the intimidating reputation associated with its name.

Significance of the Name “Arkadag”

“Arkadag,” which means “Protector,” is not only the title of the city where the club resides but also serves as the moniker for Berdimuhamedow. He held power in Turkmenistan from 2007 to 2022. Although his son has taken over the presidency, the elder’s influence remains pervasive, extending even onto the football pitch. After all, who would dare to challenge a figure like the “Protector”?

Special Considerations in Football

In discussing the unique dynamics at play within the country, Central Asia analyst Beate Eschment noted in the ‘Frankfurter Rundschau,’ “Opponents tend to play more cautiously against the president’s club, as they wish to avoid offending him.”

It is also suggested that referees frequently turn a blind eye to certain incidents. One notable defeat for Arkadag occurred earlier this year during the international AFC Challenge Cup, where they encountered challenges not present in their domestic league. One such setback came when they lost 0-2 to Al-Arabi of Kuwait in the first leg of the semi-finals.

Continued Success

Nevertheless, Arkadag demonstrated resilience by bouncing back with a decisive 3-0 win in the return leg and clinching the title with a 2-1 victory in the final. As such, there seems to be no end in sight for this trail of triumphs.
