Unai Emery Achieves Fastest 100 Wins in Aston Villa History
A Milestone Victory in Lille
Unai Emery has set a remarkable record as the fastest manager to secure 100 victories at Aston Villa after his team triumphed over Lille in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 match.
Emery’s Remarkable Record
The Spanish coach, who aims to win the Europa League for the fifth time, has transformed Villa into a competitive force both at home and in European competitions since his arrival in October 2022. At 55.2%, his win ratio is the highest in the club’s history and places him among only three managers in the Premier League to reach the 100-win milestone during their tenure at Villa Park. The other two are Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta.
Although Emery downplayed his achievement post-match in France, his record speaks volumes for the former Sevilla and Villarreal manager, who returned to the Premier League keen to prove himself after being let go by Arsenal in 2019. His impressive total of 100 wins from 181 matches surpasses that of the club’s previous most successful manager, Ron Saunders, who reached his century by the end of the 1977-78 season.
Historical Context of Villa Management
Ron Saunders, who led the club from the second division and brought significant success, achieved his 100th win during his fourth season in charge. Joe Mercer, another noteworthy manager, reached the same milestone with 119 wins after four and a half years, whereas George Ramsay and W.J. Smith took longer, needing 190 and 205 games, respectively. In contrast, Emery’s century came in just three years and four months, beginning with a victory over Manchester United in November 2022.
Villa Seizes a Crucial Opportunity in France
Aston Villa’s appointment of Emery four years ago highlighted the club’s ambition to establish itself in European competitions. Currently sitting fourth in the English Premier League, the team is well-positioned to secure a Champions League spot. Additionally, a strong performance in the Europa League could achieve the same objective.
Following a streak of four winless games, including losses to Newcastle, Chelsea, and Wolverhampton, Thursday’s match was imperative for restoring rhythm and confidence. Villa’s captain, John McGinn, noted that the result provided a crucial “building block” for the team to reset after a challenging few weeks, emphasizing the need to learn from past performances while pushing forward.
Emery, on his part, mentioned that he used the recent struggles of other English teams in European competitions to motivate his players ahead of the match. He acknowledged the challenges faced by English teams competing abroad, underscoring the respect his squad has for the challenges posed in Europe.
