South Africa started their U20 World Cup campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat against France in their Group E opener at El Teniente Stadium in Rancagua, Chile.

The match offered high intensity from start to finish, but France’s late strike made the difference.

The French team took control early, dictating the tempo and pushing South Africa deep into their half.

Their early dominance paid off in the 25th minute when Anthony Bermont fired home a precise finish to give France the lead.

Despite the setback, the Bafana Bafana Juniors refused to back down and responded quickly.

In the 33rd minute, South Africa earned a penalty after sustained pressure in the French box.

Jody Lee Ahshene stepped up confidently and slotted the ball into the net, bringing the score level at 1-1.

The equaliser injected new energy into the South African side, who began to match France stride for stride in the midfield battle.

The second half saw both teams create several promising chances.

France continued to apply pressure with fast transitions, while South Africa looked dangerous on the counterattack.

Defences on both sides remained strong, clearing key threats and keeping the scoreline unchanged for much of the half.

However, the deadlock broke again in the 80th minute. Lucas Michel found space in the box and struck a decisive goal to restore France’s lead.

South Africa pushed hard in the final minutes, but their efforts fell short against a well-organised French defence.

The result leaves France at the top of Group E, starting their tournament campaign with three crucial points.

South Africa must now regroup and deliver a stronger performance when they face New Caledonia in their second group-stage match to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
