FIFA’s Green Card Tested in Morocco vs Spain U20 WC Clash

Morocco beat Spain 2-0 on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile, during a groundbreaking FIFA trial.
Coach Mohamed Ouahbi shocked fans by using a new “green card” in the 78th minute of the match.
The decision overturned a penalty initially given for a dive by Spaniard Jan Virgili.
Referee Gustavo Tejera watched the replay and reversed the penalty decision after the coach’s request.
He also booked Virgili for simulation. The green card changed the game and protected Morocco’s lead at a crucial moment.
Spain’s coach Paco Gallardo later tried to challenge another decision, but his request did not succeed.
Morocco stayed in control and secured a valuable victory in this U20 World Cup match.
FIFA calls the new system “Video Support.” It lets coaches challenge decisions involving penalties, red cards, goals, or mistaken identity.
Each coach gets two chances per match, similar to the challenge system in tennis.
If the referee changes a decision, the coach keeps the card. If not, they lose that opportunity.
The system gives coaches more influence over key moments in matches.
Legendary referee Pierluigi Collina praised the idea as a major step toward fairness in football.
FIFA tested the technology in youth tournaments but has not confirmed its use in senior competitions.
FIFA said in May 2024 that no timeline exists yet for its full introduction.
Officials will continue to consult with teams, referees, and governing bodies before making a decision.
The U20 World Cup, running until October 19, serves as a key test.
Defending champions Uruguay aim to keep their title, but the focus is on this new tool.
The green card could change football’s future by increasing transparency, fairness, and accountability in major tournaments.
