Tragic Accident Claims Lives of PAOK Fans

In a heartbreaking incident, seven supporters of the Greek football club PAOK Salonika lost their lives in a minibus accident in Romania while on their way to a Europa League match in Lyon, as confirmed by the Greek government.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his sorrow regarding the unfortunate event. “I am deeply affected by the tragic accident in Romania which has resulted in the loss of seven young lives from our nation,” he stated. “The Greek government is actively coordinating with local authorities and providing all possible assistance.”
He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families and the PAOK community, stating, “In these trying times, my thoughts are with all Greeks, and I sincerely hope that the injured will have a swift recovery.”
Community Response
Flags were lowered to half-mast at the PAOK stadium, known as Toumba, in Thessaloniki, in remembrance of the deceased fans.
In light of this tragedy, PAOK is collaborating closely with government officials to offer support to the families affected and the injured fans, dispatching club representatives to Romania to assist.
PAOK President Ivan Savvidis referred to the situation as a “devastating tragedy” and lamented the unfair loss of young supporters who had traveled to support their team. “I grieve alongside the families and millions of our fellow citizens,” he said.
Messages of Solidarity
Supporters’ organizations from rival clubs such as Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, and Aris have also come forward to extend their condolences and demonstrate solidarity during this difficult time.
The Europa League match in France is set to take place on Thursday. In a show of respect, Lyon has conveyed its “sincere condolences” to PAOK and will hold a tribute during the upcoming match at Groupama Stadium.
