Trabelsi Dismissed by Tunisia Following Afcon Round of 16 Exit
Tunisia’s coach Sami Trabelsi has been let go just one day after the team’s defeat to Mali in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) knockout stage.
The Tunisian team, former champions from 2004, was up against Mali, who played with ten men for the majority of the match after Woyo Coulibaly’s early red card. The match extended into extra time in Casablanca.
Tunisia took the lead in the dying minutes of regular time but suffered a heartbreaking late penalty, ultimately losing in the subsequent shootout.
The Tunisian Football Federation announced on social media that it had mutually parted ways with Trabelsi and the coaching staff.
At 57, Trabelsi returned to lead the Carthage Eagles last February, having previously resigned in 2013 after an early Afcon exit.
During the latest Afcon tournament, Tunisia placed second in Group C, earning victories over Uganda (3-1) but falling to Nigeria (3-2) and drawing against Tanzania (1-1).
Trabelsi referenced the elimination to Mali as a source of “great disappointment and pain,” admitting he felt accountable for the outcome as the team’s head coach.
