Tottenhams Ben Davies Set for Ankle Surgery, Facing Possible Absence from Wales Play
Surgery Scheduled for Tottenham’s Davies Following Ankle Injury
Injury Update
Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies is set to undergo surgery for a broken ankle, a situation that may exclude him from participating in Wales’ upcoming World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The 32-year-old player required oxygen on the field and was carried off on a stretcher just 19 minutes into Saturday’s Premier League match against West Ham, which ended in a 2-1 loss for Spurs.
In a statement, the club confirmed, “Ben Davies will have surgery today to address a fracture in his left ankle.” However, there was no information provided regarding the expected duration of his recovery.
Wales is scheduled to meet Bosnia-Herzegovina for the World Cup play-off semi-final at Cardiff City Stadium on March 26th. The winner will face either Northern Ireland or Italy in the final on March 31st.
Injury Woes for Tottenham
Davies’ injury adds to an extensive list of casualties at Tottenham, as head coach Thomas Frank faces increasing scrutiny over the team’s performance, having secured only seven victories in 22 league matches this season, leaving them in 14th place on the table.
As tension escalated during the match against West Ham, sections of the crowd chanted, “You’re getting sacked in the morning,” directed at Frank, who took over the managerial role in June. While discussions about Frank’s future are ongoing, he is still expected to lead the team in their upcoming Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund.
Impact on Wales’ Squad
Wales’ manager Craig Bellamy recently praised Davies, referring to him as his “best player,” highlighting the significance of his experience and presence on the team, especially in critical matches like the upcoming World Cup play-off.
Davies stands out as the only player in the squad to have achieved 100 caps, boasting vital experience from previous tournaments, including Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and the 2022 World Cup. His absence could severely impact the team’s morale ahead of the crucial match in March.
Even though Wales has managed to navigate through qualification without their captain for significant stretches due to a hamstring injury, his leadership and skill will be sorely missed. Upcoming players like Leeds’ Joe Rodon and Cardiff’s Dylan Lawlor may offer some depth, but the vacuum left by Davies could hinder Wales’ confidence as they prepare for the semi-final showdown.
